A RESOLUTION OF THE PIMA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IN
SUPPORT OF INCREASING ETHNIC STUDIES COURSES AND PROGRAMS
OF STUDY IN ARIZONA AND OF THE CREATION OF AN ARIZONA ETHNIC
STUDIES ARTICULATION TASK FORCE
WHEREAS, Ethnic Studies courses and programs of study develop an informed
and active citizenry capable of critical thought, give voice to long-buried concerns, and
ask hard questions that ultimately will result in greater appreciation of all people, and
WHEREAS, Ethnic Studies courses and programs of study have been shown to
improve recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students of color by offering them
a rigorous curriculum relevant to their cultures, histories and communities, and
WHEREAS, Ethnic Studies courses and programs of study strengthen bonds
among educational institutions and with elements in the community, including businesses
and non-profit organizations, through partnerships and collaborations, and
WHEREAS, Ethnic Studies courses and programs of study create connective
pipelines from kindergarten through colleges and universities, and
WHEREAS, political assaults in Arizona on Ethnic Studies courses and programs
of study have marginalized and devalued them all the way through the college and
university levels, and
WHEREAS, other courses and programs of study have Articulation Task Forces
under the state’s AZ Transfer agency that consider transfers of credits from Arizona
community colleges to Arizona public universities, but Ethnic Studies does not, and
WHEREAS, the AZ Transfer Steering Committee in June will consider an
application for creation of an Ethnic Studies Articulation Task Force,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Pima County Board of
Supervisors hereby encourages Arizona community colleges and universities to adopt and
expand Ethnic Studies courses and programs of study to enhance and foster a
multicultural world view that honors our differences and our unifying values, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Pima County Board of Supervisors
supports the effort of Ethnic Studies professors, teachers and advocates to have the AZ
‘Transfer Steering Committee create an Ethnic Studies Articulation Task Force that brings
together experts in this field to promote the integration of Ethnic Studies into all aspects
of academic and community life.Passed and adopted by the Board of Supervisors of Pima County, Arizona, this day
